Hands of Cain – The Only Sound (1983-5 GR deathrock)

The Hands of Cain were Dimitris Chorianopoulos (vocals, bass), Spyros ‘S. Adam’ Floros (drums), Costas Papakitsos (synthesisers) and Dimitris Stamatiou (guitar) from Athens, Greece.

    In 1983 the HANDS OF CAIN evolved from of one of the first groups of the Greek punk scene of the early 80’s called Ausschwitss when their music was gaining a darker shade and their lyrics were changing to English. 

    Unlike their former group, The Hands of Cain had very little public exposure, but built their reputation amongst the lively Athenian dark wave/post punk scene of the time with a few live gigs in clubs like ‘Skylab’ and ‘Pegasus’. They finally split up in November 1985, and although none of their recordings was ever released their fame lived on.

 

An end was put to this local hidden secret 

when Dimitris ‘Profitis’ Petrou sent Annalogue records two tracks in Autumn 2007, “Two Steps to the End” and “The Dagger in Me”. Anna was blown away by those tracks and couldn’t believe they have remained unreleased. Of course, this had to be changed. The quality of HOC’s song writing is amazing, these are just strong compositions, and without any doubt, this album will perfectly line up with the best ever goth/dark wave albums being so close to Christian Death’s first recordings as well as the best songs by Bauhaus. 



Their tracks are pure mid 80’s despair and melancholy, typical of the goth/dark wave scene of the time, although such terms as goth or dark-wave had not yet been invented by journalists back then. The material was (more or less) preserved on dusty 8mm reels and worn-out cassette tapes – it is thanks to Dave Hewson, who digitally transferred and restored these tracks that this fascinating music escaped oblivion.

Larve & Bestial Mouths (2010 synthpunk CRO/ USA)

to most of you these two bands are already old news. Larve from croatia -basically a riot girl/mutant synth band- went and split after this ep to form another band…and Bestial Mouths from Cali already have some new releases after hissing veil and are headlining this year’s drop dead festival. But the sound and the renovation they bring to the synth table (so full of boring minimal and bad screamers clones)  is so much noticeable that we had to have them here.Each band of these 2 deserves to have it;s individual release and infos and everything but seeing that this is the last upload of this blog before the dreaded summer break, we wanted to cram in  as much music as possible…So ..play it again, Sam.

Now this is important. Pay attention because this is the newest “wave” of deathrock from the other side of the atlantic.. Just two representatives from a whole bunch of bands (alaric, cross stitched eyes, bestial mouths,belicose minds, arctic flowers, lost tribe,dystopian society…) this is a new sound- maybe a new revival, very diffeent from the cinema strange revival of the 00’s…these guys don’t bring on this elf- ish, falsetto vocal quality or the many riff switches in one track of  CS… The new (not nu hehehe ) d x r escena is closer to punk than ever – many of these bands are side projects of anarkopunk bands originally-  and they give a dark brooding desperate thing to it. I”d suggest listening to the cemetery demo first to understand this. So back to basics, guitar bass & drums, with the expert lo fi feel that characterises so many bands from the 10’s- technology gave us the tools to work from home and we ‘re doing it to the maximum.
So give it a listen, support these bands if you like them, and keep in touch, i think there will be more uploads from this new dr american scene.

Part 1 & 1919 (Dark Punk UK 1980s)

It’s hard to find words to describe the music of your favorite bands. You feel like you ”ll do them injustice somehow…Anyway, these are two of the most known dark punk & anarko from the 80’s. Well known i say…the truth is that outside Greece they are known, but greek punks seem to ignore their presence.Tracks have been inlcuded in the “return of the batcave” compilations, and you can find enough complete discographies in the blogosphere, but it cannot hurt to add these two along with the other deathrοck uploads here, they ll do each other great company.

Part 1 are very much like rudimentari peni, their singers were close pals as it seems, and their sound is just a little bit darker and slower. The themes remain pretty much the same, anti church, hp lovecraft-ian and horror. 1919 are again raw, more like ausgang so faster than part 1, they’ ve practiced their bass postpunk riffs better, and are even more desperate…
Very much like our old mixtapes, these bands always go side by side for us, so we put them together.

Los Monaguillosh – Discography (1980-83 SP siniestro)

 Los Monaguillosh. One of the more unknown bands from the scene “siniestro” – the dark post punk scene of spanish speaking bands that Paralisis Permanente started. They have an 80s punky sound full of synths – like earlier uploads Jo Squillo Eletrix or Kaos – and female vocals. Simpler times those, their dark sound is based around repeated mantras-like phrases and riffs- much like a slow Blood ‘n’ the Roses…necromantra with synths anyone? Or punk Jefferson Airplane?

She Past Away (dark wave TUR 2010)

These are our great gothic rock neighbours from Turkey. Someone please bring them here immediately. The sound is true 80’s , kinda Sister-esque but no Cassandra bullshit.  And they build some serious atmospheres with their synths and effects. Cold dark wave indeed. 5 stars

“She Past Away is a new wave / post punk band from Bursa, the opposite shore of the Marmara, formed by Volkan Caner (vocal/guitar) and Idris Akbulut (bass) in 2006. With the live participation of Doruk Ozturkcan in electronic drums, the band was totally shaped by the end of 2009.
Clashing gothic lyrics with buzzsaw guitars, allegedly broken vocals and sensory drum effects, the band evokes the cavernous experiments of darkwave era with the likes of The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus and Suicide.

After a long demo-recording session, in 2009, the duo joined to Remoov Records in which they began to work on their debut release with Süpermatik.
The common characteristic of their live performances is that they combine their well-positioned rawk tunes and harsh textures with paranoia-inducing industrial visuals, which are created by Asli Narin.
Mixed and mastered by Süpermatik, the debut album is going to be out in May, .”

va – rebound playlist (dark wave)

It’s Friday midnight, and saturday is closing in rapidly. For those of you from abroad, Rebound club is a historic dark venue in Athens, basically a derelict underground bar with dirty black carpets even on the walls and a dancing stage, going on from the 80’s on a regular basis, open only on Saturdays after 00.00.
This is an unofficial “release”, again compiled by members of the forum. 700MB’s. A cd’s worth of music.
It is by no means a definite or complete collection of EVERYTHING played in athens’ oldest cult dark 80’s venue, but it is suggested as a guide of the most played tracks during the last 8-10 years of this place.
Although we do not support giving our precious money to shop/club owners, as people we sometimes took refuge there, and the music was always there to keep us company. Most of us, we’ve all had good and bad times in that place, and this is intended as a tribute to the moments lost in darkness there..And once again, down with the fixed playlists, it’s not good for the scene. Fuck consumer droids, programmed by dj’s to entertain themselves to certain tracks played in a certain order. Pogo over them till they bleed, hehe.
So, there they are, some of the most known singles & hits of the 80s’ bands played in rebound club. If you dig’em, go search for more material, pay your respect to the artists. Don’t stick to the club hits.You ll be surprised.

pol pot – whole mistery (2011 post punk)

This is another one of the nice batch of new bands from spain. I don’t know if you remember a massive blog post  going around full of suggestions from the new dark scene 2011 and 2012 and links to download called “va- the new thing”, but this was one of them. They play a bizarroguitaropost punk full of aggressiveness, sort of like monozid but not exactly. They also are of the nice people that care for the scene, and actually sent us their lp as a suggestion (yeah, kids, thats how you create a healthy scene, by being nice to each other and sharing, the uptight gothness never helped anyone. noone likes real life divas, just the onstage ones:).Also, thank you Pol Pot, for the great cover of eisbar originally by grauzone, they added guitars and a harsh vocal, and it really raised the track above the minimal stanndard this is now – it’s the last track on this lp.So…
