Monozid – A Splinter For The Pure (2012 postpunk GER)

cover_front

These awsome people have been so kind as to send us their work for publishing yet again…Having played live in Athens this past year, and having listened to this, it is safe to say they  easily belong in the top European postpunk bands. They are active, they sound fresh and not bored, they love what they’re doing. This is great music to wake up to, both energetic and dark, balanced equally…

So,  having improved their playing skills, and after 10 years as a band, they’re tighter than ever. Interesting guitar riffs that don’t fall into the indy late 90s brit sound (such a common mistake-reference these days). I like the now slight german accent in the british vocals, it sounds original without ending up strange in the ear, they have perfected their English. It makes their songs their own. And  It (it being the postpunk genre) manages to sound original even in 2014, 30 years from its first sprouting in the 80s with PIL, thousand of bands having aspired to be post punk, few ones ARE so comfortably, easily, without their noses up in the air, both post (my preferred definition for post as a tag, post=a reflection on, and then whatever follows), AND punk.

Good work. guys.

yeah, i guess today just failed. (listen to the song with s/t as the LP)

Creep Records Discography (1980’s Gr dark)

Creep Records Logo

DISCOGS

Profile:
Arguably the first truly independent record label in Greece, founded in Athens by Μπάμπης Δαλίδης (drummer for prominent Creep band Villa 21) in November 1982. It released eight 7” singles and 13 LPs between 1982 and 1986. With the exception of one record (by Swiss all-girl band Vyllies, The), Creep’s releases were the best available portrait of the so-called “English-speaking” (songs with English lyrics) Greek underground scene of the time.
In the mid 90s, Creep Records resurfaced to release some of their back catalogue on CD.

Deathrock X Greece

With the cd format’s arrival, we’ve lost the feeling of vinyl & cassette sides. Sometimes, the singles would be the first songs in each side, and the “filler” material would usually go to the b-side of the LP. The A sides would wear out more as they were put to play again and again in dark 80s bedrooms and living rooms everywhere. Renamed the files to bring back that old feel.

Sound quality lossless afficionados, “serious” collectors & weirdos may have some objections. We gave it our best for the best outcome possible. It is what it is, be thankful or do your own version. Mp3 Gain was used to normalize volume between different uploads. You’re welcome, virtualdj’s.

The times are a-changing, 1 GB doesn’t sound as scary as in the early 2000’s and this discography was long overdue. Kudos to all great people & blogs without who, this couldn’t have been possible. Panos Geheimnis, the Psychopomp, Urban Aspirines, 10.000 eyes, Fearcondition, Mutant Sounds, AbsentFriend. A big shoutout to all record lovers out there, keep listening, keep believing.  Music, along with an open mind, can make a difference.

We don’t own a single byte of this music. We don’t profit from this in any physical way. Spread freely. Memory is the only currency that matters.

STAY SICK

Institute – Demo 12” EP (2013 dXr TX)

Not much to say here, citizens. Institute from Austin are deathrock as it should be sounding in 2013. This is their demo. You can cross a straight line  btw 80’s christian death and them. I really liked the punk via Crass twist ending “Narrow & straight”. Just hope i was rich and could see them live some day

Rosa Lux & Signo XIII (2012 postpunk dXr)

cover

This is the continuation of a rather short series of uploads from the past of this blog. 2 bands in a shared upload, 2 sides of a tape , 2 same differences, or you can call it as you like. These guys have2 things  in common- their origin, both coming from south america (brazil & argentina), and that they sent us their stuff to listen. I fear that my friends may worry that i m developing a spanish speaking gtoh goth band obsession, latinophilia, but if less modern european/american bands sounded like shit, that wouldn’t be the case.

Rosa Lux come off as a bit more diy-ish and punkish, deathrockian. I like their album covers, attitude [that they didn’t wait to have a finished mastered product to present but rather hurried along and sent us their work], their sound and that they’re carrying a dead world in their hearts (how goth, how spanish, me encanta!!!).

Signo XIII (treze) are more pust punkish, indie even. The vocals are clearer, the guitars crystal with barely any distortion. I hate band to band comparisons, but they remind me of a modern day the sound/chameleons hybrid. I hear they’re on their way to bigger things(3 more records out!), the brazilian scene is exploding. With tracks like the torturer, i am not surprised.

Enjoy

Sleep Money – Demonstrations I & II (2012 US post punk/avant garde))

sleepmoneydemonstrationsi

Not many words here. Sleep money from phoenix-arizona is a band better experienced than described, and they were nice enough to send us a sample of their work. I consider them truly experimental and original, hence the avant-garde in their tag. They have a very specific way they want to express, and they have really paid attention to the whole package, appearance, aesthetics, tape covers, prefering alternative media (tape  format rather than cd, tumblr rather than fb) everything. To me, this is the “righteous” path, the way to walk in 2014…wherein so much art is being produced you have to be sure you are not misrepresented.  So you get to mind all the details, you care about your work and want to be listened,  not just vomit your tracks on the earth’s surface, and you’re lucky if you end up sounding like this band. [If you don’t though, you’re just another necrohipster with a mac ,an ableton and a deep ego obsession to see yourself on stage (back in your school days you were probably the  ugly duckling of your school, not even spit upon but rather ignored). So, keep in mind kids, an artist pays attention to the details!]

I truly liked the noisy/artsy/samples/narration bits between the music tracks because surely, in modern times such as ours, the ordinary 4.00 mins track platform, can’t cover all that you have to say or express. And if you just want to listen to how this band sounds, go for “carnivorous” or “minimum”. Of course, just by the sound of them, it is easy to categorize them along with the likes of the nu new political dark punk movement, anasazi, dekoder, bestial mouths and as such, but sleep money are also covering new musical grounds and are hybridizing the nowave of times past.

They say this about themselves:

we’re a 3 piece; with a drum machine, guitarist, bassist, and vocalist – our influences range from christian death, bauhaus, killing joke to chrome, and rudimentary peni. Chondritic Sound has described us as “Stunted, repetitive industrial rock in the vein of stalwarts Big Black but with a Bad Party or Revolting Cocks sense of attitude and thrusty sleaze. Like waking up from a blackout under a pillow in the back room at a Touch & Go reunion.”
band info –
– started in 2011
– members of this band were also in OSS, and Cielos, and most recently in Mallevs

The Exploding Boy – Four (2013 post punk Swe)

Four

Perhaps this does not belong here. It can be argued it is too poppy, mainstream oriented, or that this genre (post punk gone indie) has been way overplayed from other media. Fact is, if this band had been playing in the 80’s they could be the cure of today- and saying this without being jaded good or bad.

The exploding boy are hurrying towards success, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. It takes a certain kind of persistence to keep a band together, mostly those who do it for A*R*T don’t stick to see the ending. What cant be argued is that this is rock played in minor, gloomy radio songs or even dark rock or dark alternative as some like to say. Would have liked it if they’d included an obscure cover, some delta blues or somefink.  Worth a listen, so you can have an opinion of your own, just before you see them headlining or sth in a wave gotik treffen somewhere.

Good music to do your chores, or for when you don’t want to listen to boring repetitve unoriginal difficult claustrophobic 80’s french cold wave. Besides I still listen to interpol, pretty regurarly.

Flowers in the dustbin – Always Another Door (cass /demo) 1983

Flowers in the Dustbin were very different and not as fast as the other anarchist punk bands, but they were still regarded as a big part of the scene. In the beginning, they were called The Anabollic (Sic) Steroids, and were around from 1980 to 1982 because their vocalist Gerard Evans became tired of the usual fast, barre chords, screaming side of punk and wanted to do something completely different. That was when Flowers in the Dustbin were born(after around ten lineup changes), and they were Gerard Evans on vocals, Charlie ‘Chas’ Loft on bass, Joanne Mead on drums and Samantha ‘Noname’ on drums.

They played their debut gig that same year at the Lee Centre in South London. Their two female members left immediately after the show because their vocalist Gerard had been cutting himself pretty badly on stage while they were playing.

Soon enough a demo was recorded titled ‘Always Another Door’ with just Gerard and Chas switching instruments in the studio(Chas did guitars and bass, Gerard did vocals and drums). At this point they became involved with the Kill Your Pet Puppy collective and where stuck between the anarchist punk bands and the goth anarchist bands. They regarded themselves in the same kind of field as The Mob, Rubella Ballet and Poison Girls. Several gigs where played, and some big ones were turned down because the band didn’t believe in playing shows that were expensive for the audience to go to.

In 1984, the band came to a stable line-up with guitarist Simon Barry and drummer Bill Mahoney from the band London’s Fear. The Mob quickly approached them and helped them release a 12″ record on their own All the Madmen label. It was called ‘Freaks Run Wild at the Disco’ and it was very different from the majority of punk that was being released at the time. Afterwards, the band got in contact with Rob from Faction and he also helped the band release a tape on his 96 Tapes label.

‘All the Best People are Perverts’ became the name of that tape, and it was released in 1985. It was followed by another single titled ‘Nails of The Heart’ which was released on Conflict’s Mortarhate label since at the time All The Madmen was having financial problems. A copy was sent to John Peel to play on his show. It contained some of the bands best work(some tracks were live and others were studio).

Shortly after, guitarist Simon was replaced by Antje Klaehn after Si decided to bail out to pursue college, and John Howells was also added on keyboards.

This would be the line-up to write and release the ‘Lick My Crazy Colors’ single. Their new guitarist had a much more softer sound so the band’s sound evolved into something even more passive and bizarre. Several more gigs were played, and this was when Flowers in The Dustbin where at their best.

Lots of material was recorded for an album meant for Cold Harbour Records from Brixton, but the label ended going going bankrupt and the album was ultimately lost(November’s Song was one of the tracks). Now Flowers in The Dustbin had left the ‘Anarcho Scene’ and were on a separate road towards something different.

Around 1986, the scene around them had lost, and no one really knew what to do besides bail out. The band had removed itself from that so they tried to continue, but Chas and Bill got into a really bad fight where Gerard had to try and split them, but he ended up getting his leg broken in the process(it was so bad he almost lost his ability to walk). That sparked the beginning of the end, and the band felt unsure as to where they should go or what should be done next. Fortunately, enough material was recorded for an L.P, but the band split prematurely before it could be finalized, thus it became the ‘Lost L.P'(Ko).

Dobri Isak – Mi Placemo Iza Tamnih Naocara (1984 SER postpunk)

Aaah. The “Nice Isaak”.One of the few Yugoslav post-punk bands. They were from Nis and
Unfortunately stopped playing a long time ago. Formed in 1983 -split 1986, and obviously greatly
influenced by Joy Division, this album was released in only 100 copies.

Lastfm quotes:

In late 1983, Predrag Cvetičanin (guitar, vocals) with Zoran Đoređvić (guitar), Branko (bass guitar), and Boban (drums) formed the band Dobri Isak. Having performed at minor local clubs, the band recorded a home made demo recording, however, the lineup dissolved during the summer of the following year. After several months Cvetičanin, with bassist Miloš Miladinović, and drummer Saša Marković “Markiz”, reformed the band.
In the period of 1984 and 1985, the band member also became Nenad Cvetičanin, Predrag’s brother, who joined the band while his own, Arnold Layne, was on hiatus. Together, the band recorded their first and only studio album Mi plačemo iza tamnih naočara (We Cry Behind Dark Glasses), released in 1986 by the Niš Student Cultural Center (SKC), being the first release of the Studentkult production, which released an array of musical and literary releases. The album, released on compact cassette only and printed in a limited number of 100 copies, had been distributed by the Ljubljana ŠKUC, and rapidly sold out.
The band presented their new material to the Niš audience, also performing at the 1985 Serbian Youth Festival in Knjaževac, winning the best performance award, and gaining the opportunity to appear at the Dani Novih Omladinskih Novina in Split on Summer of the same year.
