pol pot – whole mistery (2011 post punk)

This is another one of the nice batch of new bands from spain. I don’t know if you remember a massive blog post  going around full of suggestions from the new dark scene 2011 and 2012 and links to download called “va- the new thing”, but this was one of them. They play a bizarroguitaropost punk full of aggressiveness, sort of like monozid but not exactly. They also are of the nice people that care for the scene, and actually sent us their lp as a suggestion (yeah, kids, thats how you create a healthy scene, by being nice to each other and sharing, the uptight gothness never helped anyone. noone likes real life divas, just the onstage ones:).Also, thank you Pol Pot, for the great cover of eisbar originally by grauzone, they added guitars and a harsh vocal, and it really raised the track above the minimal stanndard this is now – it’s the last track on this lp.So…

phoenix catscratch – nectar & wrinkles (2011 GR post-punk)

Phoenix catscratch are friends. They released this record via dead scarlet records (great company with greek & foreign releases go check’em out) in the past year. We didn’t want to up their stuff, as long as they were active, but now that the band is split (why do good things always come to an end?) , we gave in. This is amazing NEW music, dark, indie, post-punk,minimal a great mix with all the genres well balanced (no nu grave bullshit tho). The two vocals that the sound of the band’s based on are reminiscent of virgin prunes, but they have a vibe of their own. This band made a blast on drop dead festival, so much that the audience wanted them to play a 2nd time.
Don’t expect us to scan the 24 page special booklet with lyrics and all, artwork by Kiril Bikov. Go buy the record , and when it’s sold out, IF we get enough requests, we ll scan it for you:)

This is maybe the fastest guitar driven post/punk i ‘ve ever laid ears on…Very close to deathrock, i wish i knew what the lyrics were about…or why greece’s date for the beggining of the end of the junta era is important to them! The guys from Motorama play here…it is their side project. What more can i say- get this, yesterday…


ps.i have included the more watered down selftitled record too… It’s got a better (studio) production…but listen to the ep first..trust me.

Monozid – Say Hello to Artificial Grey & Bootblacks (2010 Ger post/punk)

This come straight form the band itself, folks, and these guys got it together!
Leipzig-based Monozid have been playing since 2003, and they’ve become
quite the experts in post punk sounds. 
They are also quite dedicated to keeping the corpse that the DIY scene is on its feet, and they themselves suggested their records for uploading…
if only more bands like MONOZID wanted to be heard, and if only moar bands had relevance…
Well that’s as good a wish as any for 2012…

This is great dark punk history, kids…most solid guitar riffs and drumwork that could easily kill you at close distance…kill your pet puppy blog says this…

“Kindergarten along with Lack Of Knowledge were one of the Enfield area bands, although by the time of these record releases some members of the band were holed up at Lansdowne Road in Tottenham within cheering distance of the football stadium there. The band were connected to Tea House Camp not only by location (a member of Tea House Camp also lived at Lansdowne Road) but also by constantly performing together at various gigs around the north London area. Kindergarten were the heavier sounding of these two bands with a sound reminiscent of Killing Joke.
Tea House Camp were actually from Bradford, home of New Model Army and Southern Death Cult and were just temporarily based in London. Both brothers in that three piece band were actively employed by doing stints at Rough Trade Distribution, then based at Collier Street in Kings Cross.
 Kindergarten had quite a decent following at those North London gigs and I saw them a fair few times. A lot of Play Dead and New Model Army types used to come to the performances including the infamous Nick The Frog. Joolz the Bradford poetess and Justin from New Model Army would come along now and again and those two would also invite the band to there private parties in Stamford Hill which were always fun. Gig highlights for me were performances at The Three Crowns in Stoke Newington on one of Jon Fat Beasts free entry gigs and The Boston Arms in Tufnell Park which was an all day gig with Brigandage, Rubella Ballet, Ausgang and Tea House Camp performing amongst a host of others….(continued)”

Mother Disobedience – Frankie Rides the Pale Horse (ep 2011)

Οι Mother Disobedience είναι μια πειραματική μπάντα/κολεκτίβα με έδρα την Αθήνα και ηγέτη τον εκλιπόντα Frank Plastic. Σχηματίστηκαν στο διάστημα 1984 με 1986, αρχικά ως Sparmachetta, από τον Plastic και την γυναίκα του Donna Clorox ως tribute μπάντα στον Johnny Cash, αλλά μετά απο τον τραγικό θάνατο της Donna απο κεραυνό το 1987, ο Frank Plastic μετονόμασε το συγκρότημα σε Mother Disobedience και ξεκίνησε το ταξίδι στην άβυσο της αυτοσχεδιαστικής / πειραματικής μουσικής ως ένα μέσω θεραπείας για την παράνοια που προκάλεσε η απώλεια. Καμία δουλειά του Frank Plastic δεν έχει κυκλοφορήσει πριν απο το θάνατο του την ημέρα των Χριστουγέννων του 2010, εκτός από το άλμπουμ 3rd Studio Amendemnt και το EP Lahar II. Τώρα οι φίλοι και μέλη των Mother Disobedience, συνεχίζουν να ηχογραφούν νέο υλικό και να κυκλοφορούν παλαιότερες ηχογραφήσεις μέσω της DIY label τους B24

Astaron – Astaron (1987) LP

Here are the only two vinyl releases from Vienna, Austria cult band Astaron. When I was in Vienna a few months ago, I found the LP for a couple euro. It looked interesting, but unfortunately the record store did not have a record player (or I didn’t know how to ask in German if they had one… I forget) so I had to buy it and hope it was good. I had to wait 10 days before I would get home and listen to it, and the anticipation mounted each day. I bought almost 60 records in Austria, but this one above all others piqued my curiosity. It looked so … promising; I would be disappointed if it was anything less than gloomy gothic perfection.
When I finally got situated at home, laid in bed, and heard the first crackles of the record give way to synths and organs and chants and hauntingly ethereal vocals, I knew that this would instantly become one of my all-time favorites. I’ve listened to it dozens of times now, and have not ceased to be entranced by its melancholy beauty. I loved it enough to order the EP, which I just received today and have decided to share with others.
The music ranges from dirgelike chants to ethereal darkwave to haunting ballads. The EP is a bit more cold/darkwave sounding, with danceable beats on all songs; the LP is all doom and gloom, especially from the song “In an Absence” on to the end. Elements of groups like Vyllies, Cocteau Twins, I’m So Hollow, Malaria, Kas Product, and early Danse Society can be heard throughout these releases. Many songs (especially on the EP) also remind me of stuff by more recent darkwave bands, especially The Vanishing and Autonervous.
As for this duo, it contains two girls, who are never named. I do know, through some research, that one of the members was Angie Morth, aka Angie Modepunk, one of the members of seminal minimal electronic/post punk band Viele Bunte Autos (whose entire catalog has been reissued on cd, and who can be heard on their myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/vielebunteautosmusik
Apparently Astaron also released at least one cassette, called Sarg Tape. If anyone can provide mp3s from this or anything else Astaron released, I would be forever happy. I simply cannot overstate how much I love the music this band produced.
